 "makita" 2010-01-07
By R. Desilva (Bermuda)
This is my second drill like this, it feels hefty in the hand, has great toque and is easy to control. The lite is usefull. One small improvement would be some system of storing several bits on the unit, but overall a good drill.

 "powerfull" 2009-10-26
By Krista Barker (Atlanta, GA)
I never thought i would buy a cordless hammer drill because there is no way they could produce enough power to get the job done. Well i was wrong about that. I drilled right through concrete like it was butter. My only complaint is i would still like a little longer battery life but that is lot to ask for when drilling through concrete for hours on end.

"for real drill power get a rotary hammer drill" 2009-11-10
By Phillip Marsh (Texas)
Based on the reviews we decided to give this drill a try and in general for light duty use the Makita cordless tools have been fine. For Tapcon holes this drill is barely adequate but OK. For anything more it is better to get one of the Bosch rotary hammer drills as 1/4" is really the limit for the Makita.

For general hole cutting it is adequate but not able to deliver as much torque as the DeWalt DCD970 which is our present favorite for light hammer drilling heavy duty hole boring. The Makita with its lithium-ion battery overload protection will seem to stall when it is probably the power being cut to the drill motor. The 3-speed Dewalt gearbox is more effective in letting the operator match the power range to the job. The DeWalt battery pack also charges twice as fast as the Makita.

Others have had problems with the Makita chucks but so far this is not something we have encountered. There is a self-tightening aspect to keyless chucks and some will overtighten to where pliers are needed to loosen them and remove the drill or arbor shank, while others, like the Hitachi will not tighten enough to hold small drill bits without them slipping.

"MAKITA BHP454 LITHIUM HAMMER DRILL" 2009-10-04
By C. Fowler (Dallas Texas)
I've owned many hammer drills for my general contractor business.

The Makita BHP454 Hammer Drill is very good quality but has one major failure same as but worse than my Hitachi Hammer Drills: The key-less chuck spits out the drill bits and screw driver bits when you release the trigger.

The electric brake stops the motor quickly and the inertia of the chuck loosens the jaws and the tool drops out !!!!!!!!!!! This is a major annoyance.

I've called Makita and they do not have a keyed-Jacobs chuck as a replacement.

 "Super Drill" 2009-09-17
By M. Farris
After reading numerous woodworking reviews which identify this drill as the "drill to own", I recently went to one of the big box stores to check it out. Surprisingly, I found that it is on sale now for significantly less than Amazon's current price. It weighs less than my old 14-Volt Dewalt drill and seems more balanced. Fit and finish are superior. Power to spare and agile enough to handle my cabinet making.

"Light weight yet Very Powerful" 2009-07-15
By T-Pain (North Dakota)
This has to be the best hammer/drill/driver that i've ever used.

It's power/weight combo is perfect. I could use this drill all day without being fatigued and the battery would keep on going.

Drilling 1 1/4" holes with speedbore max bits does not pose a problem for this drill. It eats through lumber with ease.

This drill easily drills in 3/16" holes in concrete (just as fast as our corded hammer drill) to drive in anchors and it doesn't take much to drill up to an 1" holes in masonry (not quite as fast as the corded but very convenient to not have a cord)

The added handle is NEEDED in most cases, with all the power it could easily rip the drill out of your hand.

As others have noted, i've experienced the "chuck wobble" but I've also noticed this on all of the other drills that my co-workers have, from dewalt to milwaukee, they all seem to have a little bit of wobble, maybe it's somewhat normal in a hammer/drill/driver?

This drill has convinced me to purchase alot of other 18v lxt makita stuff and all of it has proven to be great stuff. From the recip. saw to the new btd144 impact drill, plus the LED lights on these tools comes in handy quite often!

Makita > all others.

"The right tool to choose compared to other wimpy drills" 2009-07-04
By James Allen (Portland, OR)
I'm a contractor and have burned thru many tools over the years including cordless drills. After doing all the research on specs for various other drills this seemed to be the one. So far this drill has been flawless and perfect with no complaints. Our company gives these tools a true workout every day and all of our techs love them. The specs on the 454 model is worth the extra [...] bucks versus the next model down, specificaly the extra tork is what you want. I would at this time recommend this tool to freind. Jim

 "Its a drill" 2010-01-07
By D. Ward
I bought this mostly for the batteries as I already have multiple Makita drills/ batteries/ chargers. It works. Does what it is supposed to and fits my ham fists well. Better chuck than my old 6213D.

Seems like something is wrong when it costs almost the same for two batteries or buying this drill kit.

"Great size, with power close to the average / low end of the 14.4s" 2009-10-26
By M. Rees
I've had this drill for 2.5 years now. I am NOT a construction or tradesman - I'm a DIY homeowner who appreciates a quality tool.

I was originally considering the bigger brother of this tool, the 6337DWDE - I chose the 12V variety b/c the torque numbers were very close to each other.

The batteries on this drill have held up very well. I appreciate that the drill can sit in on the shelf of my workbench for weeks on end and still work when I pull the drill out of the case. One battery has never been used at all - it showed when I needed it on a job (poor runtime). I anticipate after a couple charge / discharge cycles that it will fall in line with my other one.

In the event that my second battery does not pull through (my fault - complete lack of use) - I may even buy another one of these sets instead of 2 batteries. This drill has been good to me.

 "Fantastic!!" 2009-06-29
By Shirley J. Strotman (Aurora, NE United States)
This was the best purchase I have made in a long, long time. I have had two other brands of cordless drills in the past, and they were never ready to go when I needed them for my crafting or light household projects. This Makita is great because it holds it's charge forever, and if the battery does go down it only takes an hour to charge it !!!

 "Deceptive Presentation" 2009-12-27
By Jerome T. McCann (Lutherville, MD United States)
Neither Makita nor Amazon note that this tool requires hex shank drill bits to function as drill. Neither Lowes nor Home Depot or the Ace near my home carry these bits and for good reason: no other tool requires them. I can only get them from Amazon. I think not being explicit about the need for Makita's proprietary drill bit sets is careless at best and deceptive at worst. I put this on my wish list and must now return it while explaining the reasoning to my sister who thought she was doing me a favor. I'm not about to replace my collection of carbide tipped drill bits I use for boat building and maintenance.

"IT IS A DRIVER-DRILL! Just a more convenient one." 2009-12-23
By ATL Jeff (ATL, GA, USA)
This IS a drill-driver. It just operates in a more user-friendly way than an old-fashioned chuck. The box CLEARLY ILLUSTRATES AND DESCRIBES the "Quick-Change 1/4" Hex-Shank" method of accepting bits. Lucky me, I bought mine at Ace Hardware on Black Friday for $80 + tax. It came with a plastic storage box, a nice canvas holster, and a canvas 65-pc accessory kit with every bit you could want, including hex bit drills. The canvas accessory bit kit fits nicely in the plastic storage case along with the drill, the holster, and the charger. It is light-weight and very compact (great for tight spots). Plenty of power. Has a nice LED light that illuminates very well, and stays on for about 15 seconds after trigger release: Bump the trigger to turn it on, use the light to locate your work within the 15 seconds (or bump it again), and begin drilling or driving. It even has a 1-year warrranty on the battery and a THREE YEAR WARRANTY on the rest. Mine came with only one battery, but it recharges fairly quickly (less than an hour).

 "good purchase" 2009-12-08
By Mark Newlin (southern Indiana)
I have been very happy with this purchase. The battery is long lasting and it has plenty of power. The one drawback is it only accepts hex drill bits as it does close down on the round bits. With the number of hex drill bits it isn't a real problem. I would recommend this drill as its small size is misleading for the big job it does.

Customer Buzz
 "NOT a drill" 2009-10-26
By CleverUser (California)
This was listed as a "driver-DRILL kit", however, it will not function as a drill. It does not have the essential part that would allow it to accept drill bits, namely, a drill chuck. NOWHERE in the description of this item does it mention this fact. The documentation that came with the item did not mention this fact. Nothing would alert a person that an extra, not-included part was needed to function as a drill. I returned it and bought a Craftsman.

 "Makita 10.8v drill" 2009-09-25
By tonyS (Suburban Philadelphia)
I absolutely LOVE this drill, and I've only used it for one project. It's got the power necessary for the average job, it's compact and lightweight, and the LED light is awesome! Definitely worth the investment, and I'm glad I got it for myself. My last cordless drill lasted 2 years and died, so I'm expecting this one to last much longer, and the 3-year warranty is a real bonus when most companies only provide a 1-year warranty. I don't have big hands, and this drill fit into my hand perfectly; any woman who needs a cordless drill should DEFINITELY consider this drill, but hide it from your husband!

 "brilliant drill" 2010-01-09

checked this one out at the home depot before I ordered it at Amazon and thought it just felt right.

the combination of weight, balance and ergonomic fit in my hand. Also, the reputaion of Makita along with what I mention made it a no brainer. I tried it right away when it came on a few house hold projects and already see this is all the drill I will ever need. I am NOT a professional tradesman but do alot of projects around the house. Love the drill. Light is a nice touch too.

 "good drill, crappy batteries" 2008-11-29

By Marc I. Berrenson (Woodland Hills, CA United States)

This drill is very light for the power it has. I like it very much. PROBLEM IS THAT I'VE GONE THROUGH 5 LITHIUM BATTERIES THUS FAR. I've had it a little over a year. The repair guy said Makita hasn't mastered the Lithium technology yet. Once, both batteries were bad right out of the package. I'm now down to one battery, and trying to talk my repair guy to switch out the batteries ONE MORE TIME.

"Best Hammer Drill I've Had and I've Had Them All." 2008-03-10

By Corky

I've worked construction for more than 10 years and I have had the 3 major brands: Milwaukee, DeWalt, Panasonic and Makita . And I can say that the Makita has come out on top for innovation, ruggedness and usability.

Milwaukee has reliable stuff but the Cordless drills are way too big, heavy and clumsy. I had them early on and found the tools very clumsy and too heavy which If you have to use a tool all day long, which I do you start getting worn out. Even their impact is heavy. Like I said the stuff never breaks but makes your arm gets sore after using it for a while. The V18 is the best thing they have but they haven't updated all of their tools to the modern standards of today. When I was looking the only thing that was out was the V28 which was extremely heavy and expensive.

DeWalt has gone downhill I've seen more people change from DeWalt than from any other brand. My Dewalt drill's gears kept stripping out. so I go rid of my kit and that's hard to do since I had so many Dewalt tools. another thing is they don't have Lithium technology. They did but pulled it because of problems which I can see being very possible.

I did also try out Panasonic but it seemed more of a woodworkers drill than a construction drill so that stayed at my house. It was a good drill but not for the every day abuse that you give your drill on a construction site.

I bought the Makita LXT kit when it first came out and realized quickly that this brand is what I was looking for. It was a combination of lightweight, innovative and tough. I haven't had trouble with any of my Makita products except for my Charger which was screwing up my Batteries (which I took to the Makita service center and they replaced the charger and batteries with no problem. I Bought this BHP452 Drill 6 months ago from an online auction since you can't normally buy it by itself just with a kit. I use it every day and have had no problem with it yet and I treat it very rough. I use it for drilling out big holes with my step drill (which normally takes a toll on drills) I use the hammer drill all of the time and use it to drive all size of fasteners. Another great thing about this drill is you can get into small areas and there is a light for dark areas which in construction you don't have good lighting. This thing is a work horse. The Drill shows no sign of wearing down. This is the best drill I've had and like I said I've had them all.
