     "Makita tuff" 2009-09-28
    By Tom Kewish (Michigan)
I have used Makita for over 15 years. I beet the hell out of them. They just keep going. I purchased this for the batteries and charger. My other 18v charger got crushed. It was cheaper to puchase this then the charger and Batteries. Theses are Ni-Cad not lithium-ion. That's the only draw back. I have taken Makita tools and throughen them off roofs, smashed them on basement floors used the butt end as a hammer. They are very tuff tools. For battery tools I would own nothing less than Makita.

     "first drill, works fine" 2007-09-15
    By Jonas Reitz (Queens, NY)
As someone who has never owned a drill, this one seem user-friendly and flexible. However, I found that it took a very long time to drill a hole into our concrete ceiling -- at least 30 minutes to get a depth of 3/4 inches (with 3/16 inch masonry drill bit). It could be that this is simply the nature of drilling in concrete, rather than a fault of the drill.

This is a great drill. To get a hammer drill, drill and driver all in one is a fantastic combination. The batteries hold up very well and recharge very fast. For $99 you cant go wrong. I might even buy another one if I see a deal like this one come around again. The packaging is very neat and clean and they leave some room in the case to keep a box of screws or two if you so desire. Overall a great product.. Im one happy customer.. !

     "Great demo hammer" 2010-01-07
    By Layne Howard
I've used this hammer to chip away concrete and break things up, but the real benefit this tool provides is with digging holes in hard-packed soil to ease gardening. The "B" in the partnumber means that Bosch-style bits may be used; we use a 4.5" clay bit (Makita #751623-A). I can easily dig holes for plants, but also, with the same bit, chew away at the potholes that appear in our roadway to prepare for new asphalt. The tool is heavy--as needed for these activities. Bit changes are easily done by rotating a "keeper"--takes only a few moments. The tool comes with a sturdy case. Unfortunately the clay bit will not fit within this case. Overall, an essential tool for any handy-person. I bought a second one for my daughter, who is doing more and more gardening. She will find it to be indispensable.

     "Great Tool!" 2008-04-30
    By Vulcan762
I'm a General Contractor and we tear out a lot of tile floors and demo concrete for plumbing. On a large tile job I like to run two chipping hammers, so I went to the big orange store and rented a Bosch chipping hammer of approximately the same size. I come back to the job and the Bosch is sitting in its box while the guys are taking turns with the Makita. I had another tile tear out job and again put the Bosch on the job and again they would only use the Makita. I asked why and they said the Makita just works faster. I didn't buy mine from Amazon, I bought it second hand and never thought much of it as it doesn't look modern like the new stuff with SDS bits and I didn't pay alot for it. The 3/4 Hex end bits are cheap at Jim & Slims Tools and you can weld what ever you want onto the end of a broken hex bit. This tool works very well and has proven itself on job after job. Heck I even went out and bought some new bits for it and gave it a good cleaning since next week it will be doing its job again!

"Lighter In Weight to Hold, Heavy Duty for Work" 2006-03-26
By Jeanne Weston Carr (Orlando, FL., USA)
My husband and I purchased this Makita demolition hammer after renting several different brands from local rental shops. We found the Makita to be economical to purchase, lighter in weight to hold for longer periods of time but also heavy duty enough for continous work over a period of several hours in removing ceramic tile in our single family home. We attempted to purchase this model from a local rental store with attachments and found that we saved several hundred dollars in the quoted price when buying the hammer through Amazon.com. We did check locally and this Makita model was not found at any of our local homestores but we believe it to be an excellent choice. My husband and I are using the Makita Demolition Hammer with a 4 1/2inch tile chipping blade and a separate sharp 6 inch long blade (with removable handle) to take up the white mastic in our single family home. We have finished 1/2 of the job and are very pleased with this product.

By Valery Koyfman (S F Bay)
As the Contractor, doing kitchen cabinet installation and refacing, I bought this Angle Drill as a subsidiary tool for hard to reach places and narrow opening door installation. This Drill is good to drill the holes, but it's very hard to use it as the screw driver, since it is very hard to control the driving speed. The Makita manufacturer should add 2-speed switch to this Drill-Driver as Dewalt did.

This Makita tool also has the most advanced charging system available. Generically, its called a "smart charging system." A computer chip inside the battery lets the charger know exactly how to optimally charge the battery, to completely charge each cell within the battery and for maximum battery life. Each battery is made up of smaller 1.2-volt cells. Often a battery will drain unevenly during normal use, at different rates within these internal cells. A normal charger will stop charging the battery when one cell reaches maximum capacity, not all of them. Once this happens once, it will continue to do so as long as you use the battery. What this means is your 18-volt battery is now a 16- or 17-volt battery and it can drop even lower. A "smart charger" will charge every cell independently until each cell is fully charged, so your 18 volt battery will remain 18 volts for its entire life. This charger has a fan in it and blows air through the battery to cool it down before charging so the battery can be charged right away, unlike other brands, where the charger waits until the battery cools, or even worse attempts to charge a hot battery pack and damages it or decreases the life of the battery. These Makita lithium-ion batteries will last 280 percent longer than standard batteries and can be charged over 1400 times, as opposed to the standard of 600 to 800 times, which alone can justify the higher price tag. These slide-in batteries are 3.0 amp-hr batteries; they will provide power to the tool longer than standard 2.0 Amp-hour batteries. The higher the amp-hr rating, the longer the battery will last before it needs to be recharged. For light-duty applications, these batteries will last all day or even several days before recharging. I leave my charger at home when doing small jobs, because I know I dont need it. The charge stays in the battery without dissipating during non-use and there is so much power in these batteries, I know Ill have enough juice to complete

"versitility, speed, portability and power/weight ratio" 2009-08-23

FIRST OF ALL SHOW ME ANOTHER DRILL THAT HAS THE 4 FUNCTION FEATURE. . . . yea I didn't think you could, so bravo for Makita on that important point. If you don't care about doing an efficient project don't worry about getting this tool. I love efficient and streamlined work so naturally I enjoy this product from Makita. I have used this drill on a daily basis for about 2 years give or take in commercial enviornments and I am satisfied with what I have purchased, the ability to both hammer drill and impact drive in one light, slightly inconveninet package (and I only say that because the difficult gear changing). With this drill you sacrifice some power and tork but the benifits depend on your specific use each day. On most days I did not need to bring any other drill, once in a while I would have to bring my 454 Makita to do heavy penetrations (like one inch holes through concrete) but on an all around regular use day I only needed this tool.

Hey you have to get the right bits for this tool, duaa! Lowes carries 1/4" drive masonry bits and they are not that expensive and if you have some brains in your scull you can figure out that the bosch concrete ancor drive kit has a toob with a 1/4" drive socket in one end and a socket on the other end that will drive tap-cons (concrete screws I think they are usually 5/16") any way once you get all this together you can move fast on many projects only having to carry one drill.

This drill will not do well if you try to use it on structual concrete (high density) and you can not use a chuck adaptor to hammer drill, the drive function is not enough to hammer the assembly. Step bits in the adaptor are ok but again you have less tork (though there are two drilling speeds so really it's like a 5 function drill) so I have an old step bit that I used on impact setting and that gets through most stuff. The gear shifting is something that Makita really needs to work on. It is hard to shift nice and clean to get the function you want but after you get good at fighting and trouble shooting this obstical it is a minor glitch in an otherwise fast and smooth day of drill/driving.

On a high rise building where you are climbing multiple flights of stairs with all your tools daily this drill is a must have because you only have to worry about one drill not an impact driver and a drill, less to lose and less weight to carry. If this drill will fit your specific task and you use it daily it is well worth the money and I can't wait for a smoother shifting slighly more powerful model from Makita, an awsome drill non the less.

Buying as an asserory a ball-dent chuck to increase the versitility of a tool that cost twice as much as a drill that has a keyless chuck as a standard is like an insult to someone who uses tools profestionally. I think Makita is looking for the rich hobbyest who will buy any gadget. Also, the bag is really cheep.

Very happy with this expensive drill. Use it for work installing drape rods, window blinds etc... so the usage isn't that heavy. Have used it drilling into cement and tile a few times with the hammer drill and works well. The drill light is a big benefit since the lighting situations indoors, can be dim. On the driver setting, I would like to see the torque settings changed so that the highest setting would result in more torque. Without this I have to use it on the drill setting to get screws tight sometimes and this can cause a snapped hex heads from the unadjustable high torque.

"Have used for two months now..." 2008-04-11
By old but not dead (OLNEY, MD United States)
I have a small home improvement business and needed a replacement for my aging (and battery eating) Dewalt 18v Ni-Cad drill.

Overall i am pretty pleased with this unit. It is very light, compact, powerful and has the basics onboard...like a drive tip clip, a belt loop, and lights. This is my first Lithium Ion tool and i am amazed mainly at how fast the batteries recharge. And I get a full day out of the two batteries in this kit as opposed to the Dewalt which would go through at least three before they ran down. To a point that i had to keep a Dewalt charger in the truck to keep me going. The Makitas will go all day and dont need to be charged until i get home at night.

I prefer this drill over the hammer drill version as it is a tad lighter and smaller (the chuck is a little shorter). I keep a hammer drill in the truck and had no need for duplication ...for something i only need 3-4 times a month.

Folks seem to automatically buy the hammer version but look at the size and weight before you do it. That little bit makes a difference when you are slinging these things around all day. And compared to the Dewalt? Wow...it's sooo much lighter.

I tested a new 18v Milwaukee Lithium-Ion drill. The thing is a beast and is a pleasure to use but the size and weight of that thing is bigger than the Dewalt. No thanks. It is not worth it.

As far as the drill operation itself. It is almost perfect. Some have complained about the speed switch getting stuck at the top which has happened to me maybe 4 times in two months of daily use. Who cares.

The Dewalt did the same thing on occasion. I had two of them and they both did it.

The power is rated very high (torque) and have had only a couple of occasions where it bogged driving 4" screws. Strangely, the Dewalt, which is rated lower, drove the screws the rest of the way. I might have had the torque/speed setting wrong on the Makita ...who knows.

Overall...i would recommend it to anyone...homeowner or contractor.

     "Can handle anything" 2009-01-04
By C. G. King (Horse Country, VA USA)
I've had this drill nearly two years and it has proved to be very powerful and reliable, plus the battery seems to last forever. I've drilled through 1/4" thick metal, through 25-year-old treated oak fence boards and driven 3" long screws into ancient barn supports (think petrified wood) as well as more normal things. I bought this drill after my electric one died (couldn't handle the really hard stuff and burned out). I had doubts about a cordless drill, but not anymore. I don't use it every day. I'm not a contractor, just an ordinary female person running a little farm, but it doesn't seem to mind neglect in between uses.

At first, I wondered if the weight would be a problem, but it hasn't been because the drill is so well balanced. When the battery finally wore down after many, many months of no use interspersed with very hard use, the other battery took over instantly, still holding a full charge after sitting unused for just as long (not in the charger--it's not supposed to be left in the charger) and the original one recharged in under an hour.

I like having a case as I can store all the bits and such along with the drill. The drill has multiple power settings, the ability to switch seamlessly between driving and extracting which comes in handy when extracting the bit from a metal hole, and can switch between screw/drill settings. And thank heaven it doesn't need a chuck key. It's very easy and satisfying to use. Oh, and I use it to plant bulbs, stir paint and drill 1" holes in railroad ties used to build raised gardens. It has definitely made my life easier. I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a powerful and useful drill. I have only used this for medium work thus far, but it worked for 6 hours driving several hundred screws on a deck project and the battery showed no signs of tiring. It has a switch that quickly changes between drill and screw mode that saves time. The charger charges in slightly less than an hour.

My only disappointment is that I have not figured how to get the charger into the kit carrying box.

This drill/driver is fantastic! It has torque and power to spare, long battery life, easy and quick recharging, and great balance/feel for an 18V. Haven't had it long enough to comment on battery life. It drives 3 1/2" deck screws into treated lumber with ease. Also, has a light touch to the trigger for working with smaller bolts. The perfect balance makes it seem much lighter than it is, and user fatigue isn't an issue. The case is quite large, but provides plenty of capacity for bits and drivers. A great value.

"Best Cordless Drill Out There" 2009-08-14
    By Eric Cartman
I've used them all - Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Panasonic, etc. I've never used the low-end junk that places like Menards sell - Skil, Kawasaki, Best Tools, etc. This is the best cordless drill I've ever owned. Money no option? This is your drill.

"A bit expensive, but works great" 2009-03-21
    By M. Ahmadi (Austin, TX)
I bought this product and then ordered the charger and the battery separate. The drill does a great job of drilling and the battery lasts a long time. However it is quite heavy for small, around the house, working with screws and bolts. I usually reach for my Bosch small drill for those works and use the Makita for heavy outdoor work.

I do like its power, long battery life and the control. The light is nice too.
