"With the Makita HM1500B, post holes are easier to dig" 2008-08-31
By Frank Kleinburg (Heaven (Central Texas))
The Makita HM1500B has made quick work of digging fence post holes.. We were averaging about 1 1/2 hours to dig each hole, using a tractor mounted auger, a set of post hole diggers and a 6' steel pry bar to bust through the limestone rock common to central Texas cliche.. Most of that hour and 1/2 was spent using the pry bar to bust through the limestone..

With the Makita HM1500B we were able to cut the time to about 1/2 hour per hole.. But far more important, I am not absolutely worn out.. Previous to using the Makita, digging 5 holes in a day would pretty much wipe me out, sometimes even taking an additional day to recover.. Hey, I'm not the young buck I used to be at just over 50, and am a software engineer by trade..

Today we dug 8 holes, and plan on digging another 18 tomorrow.. Using the Makita, has kept me from having to contract out the hole digging (at a cost which was slightly less than the price of the HM1500B).. The advantage of buying the Makita is I now have a great jack hammer for future projects.. flk

"Very good tool for the price" 2006-03-15
By Michael McDonald (Lansing, MI)
I am a builder and remodeler. My company frequently has to do concrete removal work. Usually for installing egress windows in basement walls or for moving underground plumbing. The first time we used this tool was to go through a basement wall we had scored with a concrete wet saw. The wall was 10 inches thick and the the blade can only go down to about 4 3/4 inches. This tool broke through the rest of the way in minutes. We were left with a large heavy slab 10 inches thick that had been in the hole. I was able to break the piece into 12 smaller pieces within about 5 minutes to make it easier to carry. Great tool so far

 "This hammer breaks rock." 2005-01-19
By Sandy River (Norco, CA United States)
I have about 5 cubic meters of various stages of decomposing granite to remove. The spade bit slices through the soft granite like butter. And the point bit eventually breaks hard rock into managable pieces. I started off with a pick & sledge and rate this tool as 200 times easier. Or, for every hour breaking with this hammer, you would need 200 with the pick.

The HM1500B accepts standard bits which can be bought at Home Depot. It is a little heavy with the bit in place, but it does the job.

 "Hammer" 2003-01-19
By Mark J. Krenitsky (Butler, PA United States)
I like the light weight of this tool for a jack hammer. I have used it for digging ditches with a 5 1/2 inch clay spade, and breaking up small amounts of concrete. It has worked well for everything that I have used it for.

"HM0810B - the best chipping hammer on the market!" 2006-05-11
By Dennis Conspec (Bermuda)
the HM0810B is the best, lightweight hammer on the market. 2900 blows per minute, with a weight of only 11.7lbs. This is the hammer that should be used for chiseling, chipping and scaling, NOT the HK1810, which should only really be used for removing tile and plaster.

"Best Log Dog Chip Hammer on market to date" 2002-07-24
By Jay Banderob (Bitterroot Valley, Montana USA)
After years (20) of use of this and other models and brands, this particular model makita still stands head and shoulders above all others for both performance and durability in the hard daily use of the log home industry. It has suplanted all other makes and models to become the industry standard. Still it(and virtually all others) require minor modification in this application: Lose the sappy varro-handle, and create your own 2-3"x long log gouge. Or have it created for you (spendy).

Very satisfied with the power and the lower noise factor is great. Unfortunately I was unable to view "what's in the box" or I would have added two extra SDS max chisel bits 2" x 12" and 3" x 12" to my purchase. This is a great choice at a very good price.

 "Makita Demolition Hammer" 2008-09-13
By J. Zappia (Bishop, CA)
I listened to the last guy that reviewed this hammer and ordered one the next day rather than renting one. If I would have just done that years ago I wouldn't be going in for shoulder surgery right now.

I used the hammer on rock for a solid day last week while digging a 100ft, main water line ditch that was in rock infested hard packed virgin soil. I was just amazed at how well the Makita electric hammer could work. It was a true enjoyment to use. Just make sure you let the weight of the hammer do the work for you... don't force it. Also don't forget to order a chisel or point for the hammer it doesn't come with one. On rock the Bosch HS2161 20-Inch x 20-1/2-Inch Moil Point worked best.

It was around 20 bucks through Amazon.

Yeah....and the case that came with the hammer is made of such thin metal that by the time you recieve it, it can either be uses for a hampster box or you can do like I did and T-Bone it in the round can. It came so completly bashed up it was hardly worth keeping. Now days when it says handle with care on the side...the shippers think that it means, " you can drop it from a fork lift and it will be just fine."

You won't be dissipointed with the hammer though. A great buy!! jz

"Excellent choice - and better than renting!" 2008-07-14
By Jonathan K. Perkins (Harbor City, CA, USA)
Like the other reviewers noted, those who have rented breakers from home centers often end up thinking about buying. The large breakers I've rented are great, but VERY heavy and a real workout to use. The Makita HM1304B is lighter but powerful and, for me, easier to handle. Mine came in a plastic case with wheels, and included a single moll-point chisel. It's the perfect choice for me and I'm completely satisfied.

"Buy This Instead of Renting" 2008-04-24
By S. Turner (Northern California United States)
Any body who's had to break a fair amount of concrete knows the dilema- keep renting the 60 pound Bosch at a hundred bucks a day (including driving) or bite the bullet and buy this Makita breaker. But will the Makita get the job done and how fast? The answers are: yes it will do about any thing the big Bosch will, but only about 60-75% as fast. Pound for pound though, the Makita is more tool, which means YOU won't get as beat up in the process. And since you're not renting, you can space the (lessened) punishment out over more time. This tool is light enough to one hand at verticle, so you can alternate hands too. I'm more of a Hitachi and Bosch guy, but Makita makes good stuff, and this breaker is plenty tough to stand up to abuse. Tools-of-the-Trade magazine just did a test of breakers that comes out in favor of this tool also. Contrary to the picture, no point or any other accessories are included, so be sure to order an 1 1/8 tool, the longer the better. Amazon ships this in Makita's box, which has zero padding over the steel case. Consider it a steel shipping case because it WILL get toasted in shipping, though the tool itself is pretty much indestructable.

 "Glad I bought it." 2006-05-11
By rubismardi (California, USA)
I bought this tool as a homeowner to remove large amounts of slab, fence footings and digging clay. I wanted to do a little at a time since there was alot of work to be done as opposed to renting a larger brute 60 lb. at the rental center.

I compared this to the bosch and dewalt SDS hammers and couldn't find any info on what thickness concrete these hammers could remove. I took a look at both hammers at homeless depot and the sales people at several stores couldn't answer my question. Neither could the bosch tech line. So I went with the heavier 1 1/8 bits just to be sure, glad I did. This hammer excells with 4" slab, I have used it to break up to 8" but it takes longer and you wind up with more rubble than chunks. I think I would have been dissapointed with the SDS hammers for my use. You don't want to be sweeping up concrete pebbles and dust. You do want this think to cut 25lb chunks. The others had more options like variable impact but that doesn't seem to matter. I bought a makita 1" demo hammer to take care of tile and scrape floors.

Have been very satisfied with this tool and glad I went with this choice. Wish I had bought it sooner since I seem to use it all the time. I hesitated with the price but it is worth the time and labor saved.

 "A great tool for back-breaking work!" 2006-04-10
By D. paris (California)
I'm a General Contractor building 200 to 1000sq' additons and buying and flipping houses. In my area it's about $190 to rent a air jack for the day + time giong to the rental yard and back + still having to pay rental fees when rained out + kick my rear trying to get done fast and return the rental and p-off the neighbors with the noise! The Makita 1304 is a great tool for me, it's paid for it's self verses renting! Granted it is a little slower than air but I like being able to hug my honey at the end of the day, use the tool at my will, Jackhammer side wall if nessisary, and not p-off the neighbors with noise! The first time I used the Makita 1304 it seamed slow busting the first piece untill I saw it was over 8" thick, but on 4-6" it busts through great, not to heavy, not to noisy,a great tool I highly recommend. I bought a long point bit and it puts the tool at the perfect hight so you back won't blow out (a big plus with the little Lady). The tool comes with a metal storage box thats surprizingly small for a big tool and still has room to store a couple bits. It's a Great Tool for a hard job.

 "Great demo hammer" 2010-01-07
By Layne Howard
I've used this hammer to chip away concrete and break things up, but the real benefit this tool provides is with digging holes in hard-packed soil to ease gardening. The "B" in the partnumber means that Bosch-style bits may be used; we use a 4.5" clay bit (Makita #751623-A). I can easily dig holes for plants, but also, with the same bit, chew away at the potholes that appear in our roadway to prepare for new asphalt. The tool is heavy--as needed for these activities. Bit changes are easily done by rotating a "keeper"--takes only a few moments. The tool comes with a sturdy case. Unfortunately the clay bit will not fit within this case. Overall, an essential tool for any handy-person. I bought a second one for my daughter, who is doing more and more gardening. She will find it to be indispensable.

 "Great Tool!" 2008-04-30
By Vulcan762
I'm a General Contractor and we tear out a lot of tile floors and demo concrete for plumbing. On a large tile job I like to run two chipping hammers, so I went to the big orange store and rented a Bosch chipping hammer of approximately the same size. I come back to the job and the Bosch is sitting in its box while the guys are taking turns with the Makita. I had another tile tear out job and again put the Bosch on the job and again they would only use the Makita. I asked why and they said the Makita just works faster. I didn't buy mine from Amazon, I bought it second hand and never thought much of it as it doesn't look modern like the new stuff with SDS bits and I didn't pay alot for it. The 3/4 Hex end bits are cheap at Jim & Slims Tools and you can weld what ever you want onto the end of a broken hex bit. This tool works very well and has proven itself on job after job. Heck I even went out and bought some new bits for it and gave it a good cleaning since next week it will be doing its job again!

"Lighter In Weight to Hold, Heavy Duty for Work" 2006-03-26
By Jeanne Weston Carr (Orlando, FL., USA)
My husband and I purchased this Makita demolition hammer after renting several different brands from local rental shops. We found the Makita to be economical to purchase, lighter in weight to hold for longer periods of time but also heavy duty enough for continous work over a period of several hours in removing ceramic tile in our single family home. We attempted to purchase this model from a local rental store with attachments and found that we saved several hundred dollars in the quoted price when buying the hammer through Amazon.com. We did check locally and this Makita model was not found at any of our local homestores but we believe it to be an excellent choice. My husband and I are using the Makita Demolition Hammer with a 4 1/2inch tile chipping blade and a separate sharp 6 inch long blade (with removable handle) to take up the white mastic in our single family home. We have finished 1/2 of the job and are very pleased with this product.
