 "almost but not quite" 2010-02-23
By Peter Mitchell
The Makita BHP451 is the top of the Makita 18 volt lithium-ion powered hand drill lineup and despite its 2 speed gearbox should provide great performance. Overall it is a very good drill but the chuck is not the best (compared to Bosch or DeWalt) and the speed ranges are also less than optimum. It has 0-450 and 0-1700. For most tasks a 0-600, 0-1000, 0-2000 options like the DeWalt DCD970/940 drills works much better. The Makita BHP451 has in effect a low ranges and moderate high range.

The drill chuck has significant runout for a new drill and not nearly as good as those from DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Bosch with Bosch being in a league of its own. The chuck tends to hold drill bits well so long as they are smaller than 3/8" or 10mm. When using larger drill bits or hole saw arbors if there is any vibration the chuck will loosen to the point that the bit or arbor falls out. This is when the DeWalt self-tightening chuck makes a real difference as it never lets go.

The second side handle can be rotated to any position like the DeWalt and Bosch drills and this makes it a lot more valuable when you really do need two hands to control the drill. The 90 degree side mount of the Milwaukee and Ridgid drills provide a lot less support for the drill.

I like the integrated drilling depth stop of the Makita. This is something that should be standard for all hammer drills but is usually omitted entirely -- you cannot even add one later if you want to with the hammer drills from DeWalt and Milwaukee).

The batteries charge in roughly 30 minutes on average and this is in the middle range as far as the other lithium-ion batteries and charger combinations from other manufacturers. A lot is made of how fast a battery recharges which misses the point. If the drill and battery are up to the task the battery will last and not require frequent recharging during the day. Faster charge times are likely to shorten the useful life of the battery so I for one would rather wait 10 more minutes and get an extra year or two of use out of the battery. Makita recommends that their 3 Ah batteries be charged and then left on the charger of another hour to cool them down before reusing them.

Battery charge life is greatly influenced by the hole cutter that is used - much more so than most people realize. I did a quick test by first charging the drill to 100% and then cutting a single 2" hole in 1-1/8" plywood and then timed how long it took to get the battery back up to full charge. By the time the hole has been cut, which took about 45 seconds, the wood was smoking. It took more than 20 minutes to get the battery back to a full charge. Using the Makita drill and a Blue Boar TCT hole cutter (my favorite hole saws) I cut a second 2" hole in the same board and it took only 4 seconds and the battery charge was hardly affected at all.

There are what my own experience has shown to be exaggerated claims on available drill torque and battery charge times while at the same time the manufacturers without exception don't appreciate how much the right hole cutter will improve the performance of their drills. They will rate their drills at 2" maximum hole saw size in wood or 1-7/8" with a self feed drill bit while missing entirely that the drills can make 6" holes with a modern big gullet hole saw (like the Blue Boar TCT or Milwaukee Big Hawg or Bosch TCHS) or even 10" diameter holes in TJI or wood with an adjustable hole cutter (like the ones from Hole Pro).

BLUE BOAR 3" (76mm) Super Duty Universal TCT 2-1/4" deep tungsten carbide hole saw cuts more materials faster than any other hole saw. Hard RA 90-91 carbide teeth for faster cutting and longer life, ultra deep side gullets for faster plug removal

Hole Pro X-230 Kit: 1-7/8" to 9" Infinitely Adjustable Twin Blade Hole Saw Cutter 3" 4" 5" 6" 7" 8" 9" Hole Wood Sheetrock Plaster Fiberglass Plastic MDF Cement Board. Use ¼ Torque of Hole Saw to Cut Twice As Fast

Milwaukee 49-56-9050 4-5/8-Inch Big Hawg Hole Cutter

Bosch HTC300 3-Inch 76mm TCHS Hole Saw

Many of the complaints about cordless drill performance are based on real experience but often without the user realizing that they were not using the drill so as to get the most performance possible from the tool. Cordless drills that depend upon a battery for power cannot be used the same way as a corded drill plugged into an outlet and get the same level of performance. The drawbacks of using a cordless drill can be largely overcome by using them with a bit more finesse and using modern hole cutters. I can make a larger hole in inch thick subflooring using an 18 volt cordless drill like the Makita BHP451 than I can using a bi-metal hole saw with a 15 amp corded stud drill.

People should focus less on "what is the best cordless drill" and more on what are best hole cutters to use with a cordless drill. They would save themselves money and time and aggravation. There is no best cordless drill as there are strengths and weaknesses with every manufacturers products and it is really a matter of what features are most important and which flaws you can easily overlook. Fortunately there is intense competition and as a result all the cordless tools keep getting better and better. For light duty use the Milwaukee 2602 (not the 2602CT) is a great drill and for heavy duty use the DeWalt drills cannot be beat but for Makita fans and light to medium jobs the BHP451 is a good performer.

 "Good but expected better" 2009-06-16
By Sandman (USA)
Had a plethora of brands and models available from a group of volunteer crew (fathers) over a month-long set-building project for our kids' musical.

I'm an Engineer, and do a lot of projects on the side, but had never invested in a true 'construction' quality drill. My $50 B&D finally stopped holding much of a charge after a year or so of hard use so I took advantage of the opportunity to borrow and use every other drill present.

The friend with his "contractor-quality" Makita was quite proud of the price tag on his new Lithium driver, and I'll admit based solely on the battery tech and ergonomics, and reputation for eventually fixing problems within warranty - which he'll apparently need - I give it a hearty 3-stars.

That's about where it ends, though.

It continually lost grip in the chuck on drill bits and drivers with quick changes.

I tend to work fast once I'm 'in the zone' and had need to rapidly kick into reverse and back into drive, and the Makita transmission kept making grindy noises and not wanting to quickly engage.

Basically, it was frustrating to have a drill that promised so much and turned out to be less than it could be, and felt like it wasn't quite as polished and solid as a professional-level tool should be.

Comparatively, the cheaper B&D's, a Craftsman 18V, and a generic NiCad were all noticeably of a bit less hefty and quality build, but performed about the same as this Makita other than the obvious longer legs of the Lithium battery and extra power from the bigger motor, I'm just not sure the extra $300 is worth it until they do a line redesign. Feels like they rushed things a bit to get out the door with a Lithium model.

*BTW - The clear winner of the bunch during our project was a year-old Panasonic NiMH that just kept on working like a tank, and had a solid grip on any bit, instant response to exactly where you pull the trigger, quick change of direction with no noises or loose feel anywhere. In fact, I need to search for that drill on here and write up a 5-star review for it while I'm online. I am looking forward to seeing what the newer Lithium-Ion power can do for that dependable Panasonic design.

"Would not buy another one............." 2009-06-15
By L. Svardal (Sacramento, Ca)
While not used in a contractor setting, used pretty much daily building decks and such. After two years the transmission/clutch went out. Makita wouldn't warranty as I could not find the original invoice, only the credit card statement from Mastercard. The quality is just not there and with other better alternatives would not buy Makita again.

 "The best!" 2009-02-14
By Buddyjay
I do contracting work and have had many power drills in the past. This one's the best so far.

I had a DeWalt for many years and it was a good drill. But this one had the li-ion batteries and is a little lighter mainly because of the li-ion battery.

Charges fast and I can interchange the batteries with other Makita power tools.

Great purchase.

"BAD product for the professional" 2008-12-31
By M Benson (chicago)
I run a small construction company in the Chicago area. My DeWalt 18V hammer/driver passed away(6yrs old) and I needed a new drill pronto. I purchased this drill from a local box store about 3 years ago. I use the drill daily on the job. Since I purchased the drill it has been in for service 3 times!!! All 3 times the transmission and the clutch were replaced. B4 Christmas, once again, the transmission burned up. The battery charger sounds like a 747 taking off; I later learned the noise is present due to the charger being defective. The molded case is one of the worst I've seen in 16 yrs in the construction industry. My case is literally held together with duct tape. This tool will probably suffice for the weekend warrior but for a professional it sucks (unless you like to wait 3 weeks out of every year to have it serviced)!! I picked up the new Panasonic 21.6V and must say it is far SUPERIOR to the makita.

"Any one else make this? no!! pat on the back for Makita" 2010-01-12
By Timothy D. Courage
This drill is the biggest no brainer in the history of tools. Who the heck wants to hammer drill guide holes for concrete ancors and then drive the ancors in with anything less than an impact driver?! Any way saves lots of carrying two drills every where you go, just in case you need impact but you also need hammer function.

It is difficult to find the 1/4 inch drive bits you need for every app. but they are out there. You must get the 1/4" drive concrete bits to use the hammer drill it will not work with a chuck adaptor. The 1/4" drive thing also means if you need super control on your bit go with something else other wise this drill is the stuff. I have used this drill pretty exstensively and it performs well enough for all your light to even medium duty jobs, in a pinch you could get away with some heavy duty jobs with this tool.

The gear shifter is horrable, but again no other company has a rival yet so I can deal with it for now but man is it a pain. It gets stuck all the time and it is tuff to unstick it some times. You have to "hold your mouth right" (that's right it makes no sense, thats the point) to get it to work.

I saved alot of weight on my tool belt on a multi story job with this drill, Thanks Makita! Fix your gear shifter!!!

 "Amazing device!" 2009-10-30
By Dr. Atomo (Northern California)
I have had this combo drill for around a year now and never had a problem. I use it mostly in impact driver mode for wood screws.

The amazing thing about using an impact driver for screws, as many people are finding out, is the ability to back out your screws without damage! I use soft, expensive stainless steel screws and occasionally have the need to unscrew one. Using a hand screw driver or conventional driver will inevitably result in stripping the screw head, then you will need to resort to pliers or vise grips. This takes time and completely destroys your screw as well as often causes damage to the surface of the workpiece.

Enter the impact driver, When the driver detects resistance it automatically enters hammer mode and puts forward force on the screw, only turning as quickly as it can without damage. This gives the impact driver the unique ability to back out even soft screws without damage. The screws are completely reusable!

This amazing machine also has the ability to function as a two speed drill and conventional driver, although the clutch is a little slippy, even on the strongest setting it often does not set a screw properly. I end up using it in impact driver mode for all my screws. You do have to be careful though, this thing will drive a screw right through your workpiece!

If you are looking for an impact drill for drilling through concrete, you may want to get something larger and less complex this is a 1/4" drill. A 1/2" or larger drill would be better suited for that purpose, and it would be a shame to ruin this beautiful piece of equipment.

Also this being a 1/4" impact driver it would likely be underpowered in the case of, say automobile lug nuts, in which case you may want to go with something larger.

I believe for my general construction and around the home use this is perfect, no need to lug around two tho three separate tools!

Hard to find, but a best buy in my opinion, the battery life is excellent and the batteries charge in less than 20 min!

 "Don't buy this one." 2009-08-02
By Carsten Ewerling (Florida)
I bought this Tool about 1 year ago and used it only 10 times. It already broke, I can't change gears anymore.

Now I have to deal with the warranty what is long enough but I would never buy that tool again. I got most of the other LXT series and I am very happy with them. The hammer drill is great. The other impacts drills are great, too. The saws and grinder are great as well.

But don't, don't, don't waste your money for the hybrid drill, you will have a hard time finding all the bits you need for drilling in concrete, the only way is with special adapter chucks and than you are right back with a normal drill. It really doesn't work as good as advertised.

But I give 5 Stars to the rest of the Series LXT. I am a big fan of Makita battery tools.

very useful , 1 drill for 4 jobs. everything you would expect from a Makita. the only downside to this is you must convert all your bits to 1/4 hex to use the drill. Makita doesn't offer a big kit for this so I used the Craftman kit.

This is the most wonderful drill I've every had. It is cordless and the Lithium-Ion batteries charge up quickly and last a decent amount of time. It has a nice direct drive to it, starting and stopping quickly. Although it can be used as a power screwdriver it is better as a drill due to it's weight.

 "Exactly as advertised." 2008-11-08
By B. Warren (Tulsa, OK)
I own the LXT300 kit already (fantastic value, by the way), but needed a second drill for cabinet work. Since I already own 3 LXT 1.5AH (compact) batteries, this was the perfect solution for me. I'm going to assume that you already know of the quality of Makita tools, so I'll skip to the chase...YES, ITS REALLY A BRAND NEW LXT BHP452 HAMMER DRILL. I recieved the unit exactly as advertised, within the promised time frame and I couldn't be happier.

This drill has the same great ergonomics and balance of the compact LXT (white) but has a smoother, more easily controlled trigger. It will accept either the compact 1.5AH or the larger 3.0AH batteries. It does not include a depth stop or side handle as pictured, but I'm okay with that for [...] bucks.

"Great Drill, Long Battery Life" 2009-10-15
By G (Houston, TX)
The Makita blows away my old Ryobi nicad drill. The drill is much more powerful. The hammer drive is nice but I don't use it that much around the house. The chuck is easy to tighten and cranks down better than other drills I've had. The LED light is also good in tight spaces. This drill is lighter and smaller than the Ryobi but much more powerful and functional. The included charger seems to have a smart chip that knows when to stop charging. Buy quality tools and they will be provide a better work experience. They will also even out vs. cheap tools due to their longer life.

 "Gear and Clutch problems" 2010-01-25
By barncat (pa)
The gears in these drills are terrible. They start grinding and the chuck does not spin. It starts in the most used speed, # 3, and when that wears out, the user tries to get by, by using the middle speed # 2. Then # 1. They have been having problems for years. I had a drill, from over 2 years ago, and it happened, so i went out and purchased another drill, since i thought well i'll have two chargers and four batteries to use for the setup with two drills, and possibly additional Makita cordless tools. I did not even get my first drill off to the factory for repair, and it happened to the other drill within two months. The second was purchased last April. I actually just sent them both to the factory last week. Meanwhile, I am using my 18 volt Sears Craftsman drill which has been going for 9 years now at only $99.00. If they did not resolve the problem with the gears within a 2 year period, I doubt that they resolved it now. if they did, then I am glad I waited to send them in for repair now. The original Makita drill I purchased was on sale when I bought it, because my Dewalt drill went after about 6 years of heavy use. Otherwise, I would have stuck with Sears or Dewalt, which also seemed very durable and lasted for many years.I will update this review if I have an unfavorable result with Makita Authorized Service Center. Otherwise, you can assume they fixed my drills.

 "Excellent Value" 2009-06-29
By Samuel A. Mead (Florence, MA)
I've owned a variety of cordless tools, the latest being Grizzly 18V, and had learned to live with short battery life and less than impressive power. This kit changes all my perceptions about cordless tools. The drill/driver is powerful, and the impact driver, though small is a dynamo. I used both when building a tree house for my kids. Over the two weekends I worked, I never recharged the battery. Meanwhile I was driving 4-inch lags, 2- inch deck screws, tightening carriage bolts. The impact driver is a bit loud, but is so fast, the noise was secondary to concentrating on the depth I was driving lags. BTW: I tried the impact wrench on my car's lug nuts and it zipped them off and on. The only reason I don't give it a 5-star rating is because tools, while great performers, have a "light-weight" feel to them, like they might not hold up over time with heavy use, but that's just speculation. Since my tools will be largely relegated to my workshop, they will be pretty pampered, so not a major concern. I am very pleased with this kit so far.

This impact driver is my favorite power tool. I now love to drive screws. I have been working this machine in the heat and grime, it looks beat..... but keeps driving strong. I have not owned another impact diver so cannot make comparisons to others, but I have only good comments for the makita 18 volt impact driver. The drill also is a quality tool. My only complaint is that the battery charger seems a bit slow, and there is no indication of remaining charge on batteries.

It was cheaper to puchase this then the charger and Batteries. Theses are Ni-Cad not lithium-ion. That's the only draw back. I have taken Makita tools and throughen them off roofs, smashed them on basement floors used the butt end as a hammer. They are very tuff tools. For battery tools I would own nothing less than Makita.

     "first drill, works fine" 2007-09-15
    By Jonas Reitz (Queens, NY)
As someone who has never owned a drill, this one seem user-friendly and flexible. However, I found that it took a very long time to drill a hole into our concrete ceiling -- at least 30 minutes to get a depth of 3/4 inches (with 3/16 inch masonry drill bit). It could be that this is simply the nature of drilling in concrete, rather than a fault of the drill.

The main reason I purchased this drill was for the batteries. However the batteries in this Chinese reproduction is about half the amp hours of normal drill that Makita produces.

This is a great drill. To get a hammer drill, drill and driver all in one is a fantastic combination. The batteries hold up very well and recharge very fast. For $99 you cant go wrong. I might even buy another one if I see a deal like this one come around again. The packaging is very neat and clean and they leave some room in the case to keep a box of screws or two if you so desire. Overall a great product.. Im one happy customer.. !

This Makita tool also has the most advanced charging system available. Generically, its called a "smart charging system." A computer chip inside the battery lets the charger know exactly how to optimally charge the battery, to completely charge each cell within the battery and for maximum battery life. Each battery is made up of smaller 1.2-volt cells. Often a battery will drain unevenly during normal use, at different rates within these internal cells. A normal charger will stop charging the battery when one cell reaches maximum capacity, not all of them. Once this happens once, it will continue to do so as long as you use the battery. What this means is your 18-volt battery is now a 16- or 17-volt battery and it can drop even lower. A "smart charger" will charge every cell independently until each cell is fully charged, so your 18 volt battery will remain 18 volts for its entire life. This charger has a fan in it and blows air through the battery to cool it down before charging so the battery can be charged right away, unlike other brands, where the charger waits until the battery cools, or even worse attempts to charge a hot battery pack and damages it or decreases the life of the battery. These Makita lithium-ion batteries will last 280 percent longer than standard batteries and can be charged over 1400 times, as opposed to the standard of 600 to 800 times, which alone can justify the higher price tag. These slide-in batteries are 3.0 amp-hr batteries; they will provide power to the tool longer than standard 2.0 Amp-hour batteries. The higher the amp-hr rating, the longer the battery will last before it needs to be recharged. For light-duty applications, these batteries will last all day or even several days before recharging. I leave my charger at home when doing small jobs, because I know I dont need it. The charge stays in the battery without dissipating during non-use and there is so much power in these batteries, I know Ill have enough juice to complete

"versitility, speed, portability and power/weight ratio" 2009-08-23

FIRST OF ALL SHOW ME ANOTHER DRILL THAT HAS THE 4 FUNCTION FEATURE. . . . yea I didn't think you could, so bravo for Makita on that important point. If you don't care about doing an efficient project don't worry about getting this tool. I love efficient and streamlined work so naturally I enjoy this product from Makita. I have used this drill on a daily basis for about 2 years give or take in commercial enviornments and I am satisfied with what I have purchased, the ability to both hammer drill and impact drive in one light, slightly inconveninet package (and I only say that because the difficult gear changing). With this drill you sacrifice some power and tork but the benifits depend on your specific use each day. On most days I did not need to bring any other drill, once in a while I would have to bring my 454 Makita to do heavy penetrations (like one inch holes through concrete) but on an all around regular use day I only needed this tool.

Hey you have to get the right bits for this tool, duaa! Lowes carries 1/4" drive masonry bits and they are not that expensive and if you have some brains in your scull you can figure out that the bosch concrete ancor drive kit has a toob with a 1/4" drive socket in one end and a socket on the other end that will drive tap-cons (concrete screws I think they are usually 5/16") any way once you get all this together you can move fast on many projects only having to carry one drill.

This drill will not do well if you try to use it on structual concrete (high density) and you can not use a chuck adaptor to hammer drill, the drive function is not enough to hammer the assembly. Step bits in the adaptor are ok but again you have less tork (though there are two drilling speeds so really it's like a 5 function drill) so I have an old step bit that I used on impact setting and that gets through most stuff. The gear shifting is something that Makita really needs to work on. It is hard to shift nice and clean to get the function you want but after you get good at fighting and trouble shooting this obstical it is a minor glitch in an otherwise fast and smooth day of drill/driving.

On a high rise building where you are climbing multiple flights of stairs with all your tools daily this drill is a must have because you only have to worry about one drill not an impact driver and a drill, less to lose and less weight to carry. If this drill will fit your specific task and you use it daily it is well worth the money and I can't wait for a smoother shifting slighly more powerful model from Makita, an awsome drill non the less.

I build custom furniture therefore, I use a screw gun every working day. I need a screw gun that can use every concieveable drill bit plus all the screw bits. Buying as an asserory a ball-dent chuck to increase the versitility of a tool that cost twice as much as a drill that has a keyless chuck as a standard is like an insult to someone who uses tools profestionally. I think Makita is looking for the rich hobbyest who will buy any gadget. Also, the bag is really cheep.

     "Almost The Perfect Tool" 2007-11-25

Very happy with this expensive drill. Use it for work installing drape rods, window blinds etc... so the usage isn't that heavy. Have used it drilling into cement and tile a few times with the hammer drill and works well. The drill light is a big benefit since the lighting situations indoors, can be dim. On the driver setting, I would like to see the torque settings changed so that the highest setting would result in more torque. Without this I have to use it on the drill setting to get screws tight sometimes and this can cause a snapped hex heads from the unadjustable high torque.
