"Any one else make this? no!! pat on the back for Makita" 2010-01-12

This drill is the biggest no brainer in the history of tools. Who the heck wants to hammer drill guide holes for concrete ancors and then drive the ancors in with anything less than an impact driver?! Any way saves lots of carrying two drills every where you go, just in case you need impact but you also need hammer function.

It is difficult to find the 1/4 inch drive bits you need for every app. but they are out there. You must get the 1/4" drive concrete bits to use the hammer drill it will not work with a chuck adaptor. The 1/4" drive thing also means if you need super control on your bit go with something else other wise this drill is the stuff. I have used this drill pretty exstensively and it performs well enough for all your light to even medium duty jobs, in a pinch you could get away with some heavy duty jobs with this tool.

The gear shifter is horrable, but again no other company has a rival yet so I can deal with it for now but man is it a pain. It gets stuck all the time and it is tuff to unstick it some times. You have to "hold your mouth right" (that's right it makes no sense, thats the point) to get it to work.

I saved alot of weight on my tool belt on a multi story job with this drill, Thanks Makita! Fix your gear shifter!!!

 "Amazing device!" 2009-10-30

I have had this combo drill for around a year now and never had a problem. I use it mostly in impact driver mode for wood screws.

The amazing thing about using an impact driver for screws, as many people are finding out, is the ability to back out your screws without damage! I use soft, expensive stainless steel screws and occasionally have the need to unscrew one. Using a hand screw driver or conventional driver will inevitably result in stripping the screw head, then you will need to resort to pliers or vise grips. This takes time and completely destroys your screw as well as often causes damage to the surface of the workpiece.

Enter the impact driver, When the driver detects resistance it automatically enters hammer mode and puts forward force on the screw, only turning as quickly as it can without damage. This gives the impact driver the unique ability to back out even soft screws without damage. The screws are completely reusable!

This amazing machine also has the ability to function as a two speed drill and conventional driver, although the clutch is a little slippy, even on the strongest setting it often does not set a screw properly. I end up using it in impact driver mode for all my screws. You do have to be careful though, this thing will drive a screw right through your workpiece!

If you are looking for an impact drill for drilling through concrete, you may want to get something larger and less complex this is a 1/4" drill. A 1/2" or larger drill would be better suited for that purpose, and it would be a shame to ruin this beautiful piece of equipment.

Also this being a 1/4" impact driver it would likely be underpowered in the case of, say automobile lug nuts, in which case you may want to go with something larger.

I believe for my general construction and around the home use this is perfect, no need to lug around two tho three separate tools!

Hard to find, but a best buy in my opinion, the battery life is excellent and the batteries charge in less than 20 min!

 "Don't buy this one." 2009-08-02

I bought this Tool about 1 year ago and used it only 10 times. It already broke, I can't change gears anymore.

Now I have to deal with the warranty what is long enough but I would never buy that tool again. I got most of the other LXT series and I am very happy with them. The hammer drill is great. The other impacts drills are great, too. The saws and grinder are great as well.

But don't, don't, don't waste your money for the hybrid drill, you will have a hard time finding all the bits you need for drilling in concrete, the only way is with special adapter chucks and than you are right back with a normal drill. It really doesn't work as good as advertised.

But I give 5 Stars to the rest of the Series LXT. I am a big fan of Makita battery tools.

very useful , 1 drill for 4 jobs. everything you would expect from a Makita. the only downside to this is you must convert all your bits to 1/4 hex to use the drill. Makita doesn't offer a big kit for this so I used the Craftman kit.
