 "The best" 2005-08-30

"I just wrote this about the 6228DWE, same info applies" 2004-08-08
By Bob Feeser (Springfield, PA USA)
Here is a review I just wrote about the Makita 6228DWE, which is the same drill but a 14.4 instead of a 12, and it weighs just 3/16ths of a pound heavier, all for a little more money.

So here is the review on the 6228DWE:

I just got this exact drill, and I use it all of the time. It's lightweight at only 3 1/2 pounds. That is its shining feature. I also own the Milwaukee 14.4 which is a very substantial drill. It has the highest torque in the industry at 460 foot pounds. This Makita is only 200. The Milwaukee has all copper windings, metal gear and housing, and is built to fall off the ladder. The problem is that it weighs 11 1/2 pounds.

I originally got this Makita 6228DWE as a promo on an expensive compound sliding miter saw. I thought I would sell it on eBay. After getting it I decided to keep it. Ergonomically, it fits your hands well, is well balanced, has a lot of torque when you charge it up and is well built overall. The reason why I like it so much is that I just did a wiring job, running a dozen lines, and upgrading a service panel from 100 to 200 amps. That Makita drill was with me all the way, whether I was tightening screws in the outlets, or square driving the lines on the breakers, or tightening the clamp connectors. It was a 12 hour job, and I am glad that I didn't have to lug the Milwaukee around. I love the Milwaukee for doing heavy deck jobs for example, but the one I now use the most is this Makita. It's like a pet.

I think the gear housing is a strong grade of plastic, and the windings may or may not be a copper mix or all aluminum, buy hey, that all adds up to less weight, which equals less work.

If you're looking for a tougher and heavier drill in the Makita line, then look to the MForce line. The torque is around 350 and of course it is heavier, depending on the model. They also have the faster charging Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, which last longer as well. The only problem with NiMH is that their shelf life isn't very long, and with the price of new batteries, that is a major consideration.

What Milwaukee did was take the NiCad batteries to the next level. They charge in one hour, unlike the usual 1 1/2 hours, but not as fast as 45 minutes like the NiMH, but enjoy the long shelf life as a NiCad.

This Makita drill is a 3/8" drill also, instead of a 1/2" like the Milwaukee. Like I said, a really nice lightweight drill, that you will find using it more often than the heavyweight. Once the love affair is done with the Makita, I will probably go back to using the Milwaukee a little more often. For now the Makita rules. Hope this helps.

"Powerful and durable. A real workhorse." 2004-07-07
By James Arvo (Pasadena, CA USA)
I've owned one of these Makita cordless drills for approximately six years. One hundred projects (and perhaps a thousand holes) later, it works as well as the day I bought it. I've used it to drill through wood, plastic, metal, stucco, and concrete. I've used it as a driver, a sander, a polisher, and a stirrer. I've even used it to run a small water pump. It has always performed without a hitch. The Makita delivers an impressive amount of torque. I have an assortment of drills (cordless, corded, and pneumatic), and the Makita is generally the one that performs the best, both in terms of torque and in terms of convenience.

The Makita battery packs recharge quickly (maybe 20 minutes), and last longer than any other rechargeable tool I own (such as Black & Decker VersaPack tools). The manufacturer also thought ahead, considering what would happen if you acquired an assortment of Makita tools with different types of battery packs. The charger that comes with this drill can accommodate a wide variety of Makita batteries, not just the type used by this product; it automatically senses the type of battery and charges it at the correct voltage. Now that's a good design. The variable speed trigger is also nice, as is the torque control on the chuck. The keyless chuck gets a very solid grip, unlike other keyless chucks that I've tried; the Makita has never once slipped on me.

Of course, every tool has its limits. I finally bumped up against the limit of my Makita when I tried drilling 3-inch diameter holes through 3/4-inch wood (using a "hole saw"). I actually succeeded in drilling several such holes with the Makita, but only by proceeding a little at a time. The drill would over-heat after several minutes of drilling, and shut itself off. But, this is actually an endorsement in disguise. First, the Makita could spin this rather large hole saw with enough torque to cut holes, which is quite a challenge for any drill. Second, it was smart enough to shut off rather than burn up. So, I cannot complain. It performed admirably even in this rather extreme test.

I cannot find a single thing to complain about. If my Makita were to burn out today, I'd say it had fulfilled its duty several times over, and I'd go right out and buy another one. Now that's a strong endorsement. It's a great product that's designed to perform and to last. Well done Makita!

 "Excellent quality drill" 2003-11-28
By
Makita makes a number of fine cordless drills, including this one, I also own a #6213 D drill that's worked flawlessly for four years of regular use. Makitas use plenty of large ball bearings and well-designed motors, and have a reputation for reliability among contractors, along with Hitachi and DeWalt. Like any mass producer, there are occasionally bad drills out there, but you will find far fewer of them than with the cheaper brands.

Now Rigid is the new glamor player in town, due mainly to its temporary warranty deal (though the tools are made in China - yuck!), but since no one has used them for any length of time (including contractors), you'll be a guinea pig to see if they are 'contractor quality', or not. Personally I'm not thrilled with the poor experience of myself and others trying previous Home Depot lines (Ryobi, etc) of cordless tools, and I'm not willing to give up the Makita's excellent battery life and overall durability.

"Nice drill, but Makita has problems...IMPROVEMENT NEEDED!" 2003-11-02
By I. Leong (Taylors, SC United States)
I own both this drill and the earlier similar and slightly larger model, the 6213. I have three single speed Makita cordless drills and have owned them for 25 years. I will no longer buy another. The clutches failed on both the 6227 and the 6213 within weeks. The drill motors just keep spinning, and the chuck does not move. The three single speed drills continue to function flawlessly. Thank goodness I can use my 12 volt batteries in one of them and in my impact tool.

I have just purchased replacement drills from the new Ridgid line at Home Depot. These have a three year warranty and a Lifetime Warranty, if purchased before December 31, 2003.

 "tilemans mixer" 2009-04-19
By Marlin Edinger Tile (memphis,TN. and anywhere else they want me.)
I have used makita hp2010n for mixing thinsets and grouts for over 20 years. I have only gone thru 3 of them. The weight is not as bad as other big drills I have used,(and those I gave away).I was talked into buying a lighter model the 2050. I used it for the last 2 years, when when my third 2010 burned up. Somewhat of a mistake, not enough power, and Today april 18th 2009, it died after 2 short years.I'm buying my forth hp2010n on line right now. One thing it and simular hammer/drills of this type can't do is be a real hammer drill, they are all to slow. So buy a hammer drill that takes sds bits etc.I have bosch and makita sds hammer drills they work great. As far as mixing thinsets, grouts for tiling and regular drilling with great power, I haven't found anything on the market I like better. Oh yeah and 5,6,7 days a week for 7 years each. Well you do the math.

 "Makita HP2010N" 2001-12-13
By
I bought the Makita HP2010N back in 1990 and still have and use it today. It has been used extensively in hammer-mode with a 3-5/8" hole saw to cut holes for ceiling pan boxes in oak beams and for overhead drilling on post and beam construction. It will spin a 7/8" X 18" Greenlee Nail Eater in the "High Speed" position repeatedly through 12" solid oak beams with very little effort.
The ½"chuck is very good and when properly tightened, never seems to let the bit slip even under heavy hammering in masonry. This hammerdrill is heavier than the others I currently own and although it has a ¾" masonry capacity, it is slightly slower to complete holes when drilling in hardened concrete, mostly due to the lower impact of the Makita's hammer mechanism. Because of this, I use it mainly for drilling in hollow concrete block, hard wooden beams or metal, where this drill really excels. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy masonry drilling. A rotary hammer is usually a better choice for that type of work, but a hammerdrill such as this one can also do the job satisfactorily sometimes.
The HP2010N is a very rugged and well made tool. During almost twelve years of very hard, on the job use, the only repairs made have been to replace a worn out trigger switch, brushes (due to normal wear) and a damaged power cord.
I would definitely recommend this tool for anyone who is looking for a very durable, long lasting hammerdrill that will only occasionally be used for drilling in masonry.

 "This is the bomb!" 2008-10-15
By Leslie Newman (Harriman, NY USA)
I am a tile contractor and bought this for tile removal as I got tired of removing tiles by hand.

I got this unit because it's a lot lighter than a demo hammer and it's perfectly designed to remove tiles.

I use this tool alot and so far it hasn't given me any problems. It gets bumped around alot and is still going strong.

I have also used this to scale newly poured concrete and it worked like a charm. It's also really good for breaking up concrete.

Demo hammers have their place but if you want something light that will get the job done easily, consider this one. It's really great.

I am a tile installer and I have to remove tile all the time for prep. This tool is great for tile removal, I have used one for about 3 years now and it is still going strong. I actually use to remove tile by hammer and chisel, not no more. This is even better then renting one of those pneumactic tile removers that you hook up to a air compressor. I use this in conjunction with the Bosch concrete grinder and WOW, you would not believe how fast you can get tile up and grind down the thinset. Great product.

 "A great timesaver" 2003-06-11
By Ismael C. Alvarez (Washington, D.C. United States)
I bought the Makita to help in renovating a remuddled kitchen. I wanted to clear the stove/sink wall of poorly installed ceramic tiles which looked daunting if done by hammer and chisel. Much to my surprise, using the Makita, I was done remarkably fast...with a bonus of it being enjoyable. The tool is comfortable to hold and of reasonable weight. In fact I was done before any fatigue set in. The variable speed trigger gave me very exacting control of chisel penetration and minimized wall damage. Eye and ear protection of course is a must. I'm now considering the bathroom. For removing tile it excels.

"With the Makita HM1500B, post holes are easier to dig" 2008-08-31
By Frank Kleinburg (Heaven (Central Texas))
The Makita HM1500B has made quick work of digging fence post holes.. We were averaging about 1 1/2 hours to dig each hole, using a tractor mounted auger, a set of post hole diggers and a 6' steel pry bar to bust through the limestone rock common to central Texas cliche.. Most of that hour and 1/2 was spent using the pry bar to bust through the limestone..

With the Makita HM1500B we were able to cut the time to about 1/2 hour per hole.. But far more important, I am not absolutely worn out.. Previous to using the Makita, digging 5 holes in a day would pretty much wipe me out, sometimes even taking an additional day to recover.. Hey, I'm not the young buck I used to be at just over 50, and am a software engineer by trade..

Today we dug 8 holes, and plan on digging another 18 tomorrow.. Using the Makita, has kept me from having to contract out the hole digging (at a cost which was slightly less than the price of the HM1500B).. The advantage of buying the Makita is I now have a great jack hammer for future projects.. flk

"Very good tool for the price" 2006-03-15
By Michael McDonald (Lansing, MI)
I am a builder and remodeler. My company frequently has to do concrete removal work. Usually for installing egress windows in basement walls or for moving underground plumbing. The first time we used this tool was to go through a basement wall we had scored with a concrete wet saw. The wall was 10 inches thick and the the blade can only go down to about 4 3/4 inches. This tool broke through the rest of the way in minutes. We were left with a large heavy slab 10 inches thick that had been in the hole. I was able to break the piece into 12 smaller pieces within about 5 minutes to make it easier to carry. Great tool so far

 "This hammer breaks rock." 2005-01-19
By Sandy River (Norco, CA United States)
I have about 5 cubic meters of various stages of decomposing granite to remove. The spade bit slices through the soft granite like butter. And the point bit eventually breaks hard rock into managable pieces. I started off with a pick & sledge and rate this tool as 200 times easier. Or, for every hour breaking with this hammer, you would need 200 with the pick.

The HM1500B accepts standard bits which can be bought at Home Depot. It is a little heavy with the bit in place, but it does the job.

 "Good Drill" 2008-07-29

This is a great hammer drill for everyday purposes. It has good power and nice features, such as the L.E.D. light. I thought the light was a gimmick at first, but when it was late afternoon and I find myself inside a building with no lights, the light was great. I have tried other hammer drills but for the money you can't beat this one. Of course if you are going to use this tool all day long there are better options. I bought the Makita HP2070F for my all day use Hammer Drill and it is a beast.

"go buy the milwaukee 5387-22!" 2006-07-18
By Brent L (Los Angeles)
As a long time milwaukee drill fan (and an extremely happy owner of the venerable Milwaukee 5371 2 sp hammer drill from 1984!) I purchased this Makita for an employee at his request - and it was cheaper to boot!

Now, mind you this is a CORDED 2-speed gearcase hammer drill, so when we plugged it in an tried to use a 1-1/8" ship auger in a 2x6 - guess what - the clutch kicked in - THE CLUTCH? nice touch for an underpowered drill - like a small drill like this needs a clutch! This is not a cordless screwdriver - but a "heavy duty" drill.

Looks like a bunch of LAWYERS designed this TOY!

So I pulled out my 5371 milwaukee and instantly blew through the wood. needless to say, the mak went right back into the box and back to Amazon. In exchange, I ordered the NEW version of my drill, the Milwaukee 5387-22 and it is every bit as good as the old one - and in a totally different league than the BLUE TOY from Makita.

As usual, AMAZON was Amazing in the ease of return and fairness factor - thanks Amazon.

my 2 cents!

the HM0810B is the best, lightweight hammer on the market. 2900 blows per minute, with a weight of only 11.7lbs. This is the hammer that should be used for chiseling, chipping and scaling, NOT the HK1810, which should only really be used for removing tile and plaster.

It has suplanted all other makes and models to become the industry standard. Still it(and virtually all others) require minor modification in this application: Lose the sappy varro-handle, and create your own 2-3"x long log gouge. Or have it created for you (spendy).

"Latest redesign proves Makita is probably the best" 2002-11-04
By
I replacd a Ryobi and a DeWalt cordless drill/driver with the 6217DEX - both were old and underpowered. The Makita may cost more than the competition, but look carefully at what you are getting: top notch build quality and features that others don't offer, especially the NiMH batteries! My two older drills were had NiCad's and I have been largely disappointed with the performance of those batteries. The ability to hold a charge and tool run time gets worse with age. I bought the Makita 18V cordless combo about 3 years ago and they came with NiMH batteries - what a world of difference! Excellent run times and no battery problems. I needed a lighter drill/driver for general around the house use and the new Makita was an easy choice, especially after seeing how they have improved the overall design and added features like a rubber grip, selector mode switch for screws or drilling. Add to that a 2-speed gear box and you have a tool that will keep on working for years to come. I look at buying the Makita as a LONG TERM INVESTMENT, not some "use and throw away junk" like you'd find offered from other manufacturers (my DeWalt falls into this category as far as I'm concerned)

 "quality control is terrible" 2010-03-31
By Bryan Sanders (Chicago)
I bought two of these kits and the discount is hefty but at a price. Both kits lacked the depth rod, one lacked the side clip, both lacked the white plastic covers for the spare batteries, and one kit had a defective battery charger. Other than that the drill kits were as advertised.

Drill performance is adequate for most jobs and adjusting the speed range and hammer and driver modes is easy to do. The chucks tighten easily to hold even small drill bits but with vibration the chucks will loosen and you need to stop and retighten them.

Drill torque is average for 18 volt drills, better than the 450 in. lb. models but not in the same league as the Milwaukee 2611 much less the DeWalt DCD940 and DCD970 drills. This lower torque is compounded by the lack of a 3-speed gear box like the top of the line DeWalt drills. Strange that the manufacturers make lower powered cordless drills but do not see the need to provide more gear range options to compensate (other than DeWalt and Ridgid).

Battery charge time is good but Makita recommends a 60 minute cool down period after charging so for maximum battery life a 90 minute recharge time is evidently required.

The 3 Ah batteries do not have recessed contacts so the plastic covers are important for the spares. Holes per charge is average for 18 volt drills with full size batteries.

The Makita drills are lighter than comparable drills from DeWalt and a lot of that is the result of a lighter battery. The Makita 3 Ah battery weighs about 22 oz. while the DeWalt XRP batteries weigh 37 oz. or nearly a full pound more. The DeWalt battery's weight is offset by being able to deliver more power to the drill motor for heavy duty use and it provides a lot more holes per charge.

With lithium-ion drills I have read that they will not provide as much peak power as a NiCad and that has been my experience as well. I tend to just buy the next size up and get a drill with a higher power or torque rating and this works well most of the time.

The side handle that Makita makes is my favorite in that it locks in any position and is smooth to tighten compared to the DeWalt design. It is not as long as the handle that Milwaukee provides with the 2611 drills but it is also not limited to 90 degrees like the Milwaukee side handle. Makita does not provide a home for the side handle in the case which it not at all unusual. Only Milwaukee take the trouble to create a carry case that holds everything for each kit instead of taking the one size fits all that Makita, Hitachi, DeWalt, and others take. For attention to the details Milwaukee has a sizable lead over its competitors. For driving and drilling power the DeWalt drills are the best available.

Something that Makita used to do is not have holes at the back of the drill where your hand will cover the cooling vents. With their newer drills the venting was changed and now it is very easy to cover the vents and cut the cooling of the motor by half. Something to take note of when using the drill with both hands. When I am making holes in stucco I find myself using both hands with one hand on the back of the drill to add pressure. The new Blue Boar TCT hole cutters for stucco and wood make short work of the stucco or brick but a bit of pressure is needed to cut through the plywood and a second hand helps.

BLUE BOAR 6-1/4" (159mm) Stucco-Brick & Wood Tungsten Carbide Tipped TCT Hole Saw with 4" shank (M16 Thread), 10mm carbide pilot bit, ejection spring

I expect that the drills will hold up well based on my experience with other Makita cordless tools but that experience may not be typical for the brand. I would not recommend the reconditioned kits from Makita unless you have time to deal with their customer support people to get missing items or replace defective ones.
